Instjbanoe Companies—(Continued). prosperity of the Company, bo each feels its reverse*, though both are felt in different degrees. As to the necessity for such an undertaking it is quite clear that it is called for. The business of Fire and Marine Insurance has been, and still is, increasing throughout the colony, and especially is this go in the Auckland Provincial District. The vast returns which have been obtained by our local companies demonstrate beyond a doubt that a business of very great magnitude is being transacted year after year, and that these enormous results are produced upon a very small amount of called-up capital. None of these extraordinary results, however, are produced by Companies formed upon the mutual principle, by which every additional Iniurer, by insuring, lessens the cost of insurance, and creates a powerful protection against, that carelessnesa v fc'dm T7 which fires are chufty due—a princTp'le'wnich'induces greater care and caution in all households and places of business. Building and population, too, are both on the increase, and there is every prospect of this continuing. All the Fire and Marine Insurance Companies in New Zealand are based upon the ordinary principles, by which profits are divided amongst Shareholders only, and such rrgnrd for Insurers as is bow proposed fiSdi no place in their constitution. Ii is reasonably concluded, there rore, that a wide fi"ld lies open to the Company now introduced to the public, Bnd a prospect of sucoesp fer'ainly hs great, if not greater, than th«t ln'UtoHo accomplished by similar insti« tutions is now presented for acceptance. As to the Company's projects— The success which has followed the different Australian Mutual Life Associations must be well known, and the increasing numbers of such institutions nugurs well that the principle of mutuality is the key to this vast measure ofsucoess. If success follows that principle when applied to risks of such an uncertain nature as life risks, it is impossible to advance any sound arguments against the like results being obtMined in applying the like principle to the less hazardous undertaking of Fire and Marine Insurance. One Mutual Fire Sooiety in Australia has been in existence nine years up to May, 1881, and for the last eight years it has paid 20 per cent, bonus dividend equally between Shareholders and Insurers, besides 8 per cent, interest to Shareholders upon t seir paid-up capital, and in May, 1882 (the end ef its tenth year), it bad in invested funds tbe handsome amount of £45,000. Wh&t is more remarkable still is that these results have all been produced from a called-up capital of only Six thousand two hundred and fifty pounds. Forms of application for Shares can be obtained at the Company's Offices, Canada Buildings, Auckland, or from any Branch of the National BaDk of New Zealand, where the game will be received up to the 10th August next. If no allotment is made, the deposit will be returned without deduction, and when the number of Shares allotted is less than the number applied for, the surplus will be credited in reduction of the amount payable on allotment. Copies of the Memorandum and Artie 1 es of AggQßWiion of the Company may b» inspe6|f^fe«iit the office of the Company's Agencies will be established throughout the Colony as soon as practicable.
