AFTEENOON SITTING. . j Wellington, Yesterday. The House met at 2.80. Mr Montgomery gave notice that on the motion for the second reading of the Loan Bill Le would more, as an amendment, that this House does not approve.of the loan proposals of the Governmeut. Major Atkinson mov; d that this House do vow adjourn after the notice which had beeu given, as iv accordance with con stitutiqnal usage Government could not proceed with any other business. He was glad Mr Montgomery had made up his mind to combat the proposals of Government. He regretted, in the interest of public business, that he had not done so sooner, but betlsr late than never. He would be glad to meet him in fair fight at 2.30 to-morrow, by placing the loan bills first on the Orders of the Day. . Mr Montgomery said he bad no objection to the motion. The reasoi earlier action had not been taken was because the loan measure had not been down.
Major Atkinson replied that that was simply an excuse. i.'he bills had now been down three weeks, and the Financial Statement announcing what Govemmeut intended doing had been before the House nearly three months. The motion was carried, and the House adjourned at 3.20. This day. The Debate Commences. Major Atkinson is just moving the second reading of the North Island Loan Bill, and is speaking fuMy on the subject.
