THE IRISH LAND CORPORATION.

A cable special to the World from London says :—The new Irish Land Corporation, of which I presume the cable has already informed you, cannot fail io exercise great influence on future events in our sister island. Its object is to afford assistance to distressed landlords, so that they can cultivate their land ; also to protect tenants who pay their rents, find a market for their crops, and generally to stand by them. The association was gotten up by Kavanagh, and most of the Irish, landlords have already joined it, or promised to join it, by way of giving an effective answer to Gladstone's oft* repeated taunt that they have done noth.« ing to protect their own interests. The capital already subscribed amounts to £750,000. Of course this association cannot fail, sooner or later, to come into collision with the Land League, but Mr Gladstone has told the landlords that they ought to defend themselves, has blamed them for not defending themselves, and they have taken him at his word, with the excellent prospect of bringing the country within a measurable distance of a social war. Everything points to a renewed prospect of serious troubles and disturbances in Ireland.

What neat things Charlie Lamb could say! On a wet, miserable, foggy London day in autumn,'he was accosted by a beggar woman with, " Pray, sir, bestow a little charity upon a poor destitute widow woman who is perishing for lack of food. Believ? me, sir, I have seen better days." "So have I," said Lamb, handing the poor creature a shilling ; "so have I; it's a miserable day! Good-bye *good-byeJ"
