[By Telb&baph.] (fbom oub own cobbespondent.) 1 Wellington, Last night. The Public Petitions Cpitamittee report, ' in the matter of JamesiD'urvis, of Coromandel, that they do not consider it advisable to report on.the case, as a Commission has already Reported upon it Tole's Public Health Act A mendment Bill is as follows:—" This is the 153 rd bill out. 2 Section 53 of 'The Public Health Act, 1876 'shall be read as if the following proviso were enacted therewith ■—'Provided that where such local Board doe* not make such application, then complaints or application may be made as aforesaid by any person or persons aggrieved by such foul or offensive watercourse or ditch, and thereupon the like proceedings shall be had with the like \ incidents and consequence as to making
orders,' penalties for disobedience of orders, appeal, and otherwise, as in the case of an application as aforesaid relating to foul or offensive ditches or water~ courses, or a complaint relating to a nuisance made respectively to a Resident Magistrate.'" This day. There is a growing feeling among members against borrowing this year, and many who refrained from voting on Mr Moss' amendment, because it was regarded as a Ministerial question, are expected to go against both loans till next year. *tMr Eryce replied to the telegram from Te Ngakau as follows:—"I accept tb« present of cattle which Tawhiao has made to celebrate the opening of the bridge over the Waipa. Friend, that bridge has been named Whatiwhatihoe. I hope it will prove to be really the first fruits of a new era of good understanding between the two races—'the Europeans and the ' Maoris. Friend, listen! Ido not intend to reply to that present just now, as I mean to come to Waikatosoon after Parliament has risen, which may perhaps be in one month or two months, and then I will reply to that expression of goodwill. If the first fruit (Whatiwhatihoe) is pleasant to the taste, the crop ought to be good and plentiful.— From your friend, John Bbyoe."
