OUR MINES.

NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL.

The manager reported on the Ist as follows:—• Gilmour has completed the contract in Bbaft. I hare had to suspend work in the big, winze on the hill side of shaftj for a few days, on account of having to pull down the old portion of the shaft from the Burface up-to brace. The leader in the bottom of * winze • still looks well, showing gold at every breaking down. Since starting to sink in the solid, we have gone down 10 feet, making the total depth 70 feet. 1 We are making good progress with poppet-legs, &c, and if all goes right, I expect to be in full swing in a fortnight from now.—G. S. Clabk."

QUEEN OF BEAUTY. The mine, manager reported on Tuesday , ; last:—Bottom level: During the fort* ,•-' night the bottom drive on the reef has been extended 23 feet, making the total ■■■ distance in from the chamber 86 feet,

which leaves 19 feet to drive to get under the winze. v For the last 15 feet back from „. the face, the reef has widened out to ten ".Zjeet wide, tke whole of' which is sent to ■fthe battery. The reef is interlaced :, - with ..small veins of quartz running " through 'it .in different directions. . Thede ..veins, carry a great quantity ''of-"bright mineral, and all of them carry gold, which is found sometimes in one part .of the face and sometimes in another. richest patch of stone yet found was Oon the right hand side of the drive, close *down on the floor. This was found ahout aighfc feet back from the present face. Gold being seetfis of frequent occurrence, but not of* Sufficient quantities* as to warrant special reports of same being sent - -to you; however, you may depend upon a '■'Vopd yield from the crashing of this stone. ■Winze -The winze in No. 8 level has only ' been.sunk eight.feet.during the fortnight, owing to the slowness of the contractors, ."' and the amount of water it has been making (from 25 to 30 buckets being hauled ijau *n hour). The bottom of the , winze-tr«t n°t broken through yet to either;;.sidf ot-tbe reef. There are three . veina gold in the winze at present : -i^one^ on^Jhe hangingwal! side of the winze, one going into the hangingwall "~ -"further up the VFinze, and one on the footwall-side of the winze. These veiDS continue rich, and show a good deai of gold, but we have not the same ndvantage for collecting it since the water came in, ' as we have to pick up the bottom under water, 1 and a number of the shots •re fired under water also; the stone is then sent up without picking. Piafco side of shaft: The drive on this reef at No. 8 is in 76 feet from the chamber, of which 20 feet was driven l>y the present contractors since last Monday week. Last week a splice came into this reef, catting it diagonally in a south-western direction; The portion of the reef we had in hahd tapered away to a thin point, and it was principally composed of a blaok metallic composition, which did not carry much gold. On the inside of this there wssthree fpet of mullock, and the quartz is now forming again inside. This quartz is, of a superior quality to anything* I have seen on this side—of- the-: shaft. I canoot say how thick t the reef > will be as we are not through it'.,"fet.; City'of London shaft: The ladder* will all be put into the City of London shaft tomorrow. -There will then be a complete ladder way from No. 8 level to .the'rorfabe, independent of the shaft. I haje not started driving qp^the Queen of the Jtfay reef yet, as I thought it would be better,to delay until we started stoping, when we could get the mullock for the stopet.— Gjjohge Biylck: ; .
