WAITEKAURI.
(FBOM OUE OWN COHHESJPONDENT.} . Waitekiubi No. 2,—Mr Patrick Kelly, manager of this mine, leaves for the Thames to day with about 310 ounces gold, the yield of 190 tons of quartz from Morton's No. 3 tribute. He expects to hare to pay you another visit in about a fortnight with four other parcels from tributing parties. That is an indication that this mine at all events is in a healths-condition. Waitekattbi No. 3.—ln the crosscut in the low level, which is being put.-in to intersect the tribute leader, an enormous channel of water was struck about a week ago. To use the words of Mr Kelly.it looked as "if they had come across a branch of the sea." None of the men had ever seen the like. The consequence was that work was suspended for a week, but was resumed on Monday. The crosscut Will be extended another3o feet to mike | sure of getting the leader, for it is not cer- | tain it has not been" "passed. The river of water which has been flowing so freely has had the effect of completely draining the I country overhead, the workings of- which 1 had been drowned out. It is now as dry as a bone. Mr Kelly wilh start a rise in the fine weather, probably ■ month hence, to connect with the upper levels. The present low level will perhaps bo converted into a main adit for both/mines. Welcome.—Moore and party hare an excellent prospect. They are putting in a crosscut in an old drive lower, down than their former workings. When they get underneath the shot of gold they will rise. There is not much work of importance doing in the other mines at present. Bat the roads are in such a terrible condition that there is no encouragement for anyone to attempt anything.' - But' don't be alarmed, this country , poly requires thorough prospecting ; that-is, hard work, not scrip swindling, nor yet. the promoter's share "racket." Of this I am confident, that there are reefs and leaders here that have not yet been unearthed ; the specimens and stone found in the creeks and elsewhere prove that.
