OUR MINES.
QUEEN OF BEAUTY.
Another patch of good gold was taken out of the winze yesterday, 401bs of specimens and 3Olbs of picked stone being bagged. This is by far the largest haul since the winze was started. The depth of the winze, was measured yesterday, and found to be only 40 feet from No. 8 level, leaving another 12 feet to sink before the drive at No. 9is broken into. This drive is now in 86 feet, which/leaves 19feet before getting under the winze. The reef continues to show gold, though no change worthy of note has taken place in it during the last few days. Crushing was resumpd on quartz from the. winze . with fire head this morning, and they will be kept on it all the week if the water does not hinder the contractors from getting out a sufficient supply of quartz.. Some of the directors visited the mine this morning, and expressed themselves well satisfied with its prospects. KUBANUI HILL.
The manager reports for last week as follows: —"Junction leaders: There is no material alteration here since my last : - report; in fact, this applies to all the- 1"-1; workings in hand. Kelly's: Nothingr,. fresh from here, although good.class of mineral continues to be seen; which is generally considered a favorable indica* tion for gold. Albion: The reef here is still unchanged to all appearances. Work - is continued on it as usual, and fair headway made. Two hands have been started; - to take out a trial crushing from the first leader cut in the crosscut in from' the Albion shaft. Mr Bayldon is of opinion it is the Caledonian hangingwall specimen leader, and it is likely looking for gold. .. The battery started to-day, but I;shal) not be able to «tate how the crushing is shaping for a few days to come. Battery _ is in good working order.—T. H. Cbaw*V foed." ...
CALEDONIAN
The manager reports: " The winze on hanging wall leader is still in got J country. ■ The reef is still fully 3ft in thickness, carrying good minerals for gold, but nob*, has been seen in the stone yet. There is no change in specimen leader, east of No. 2 chamber, to mention. Winze, footwall of No. 1: The drive has been driven 17ft this week, where all the small leaders hare made into a solid" body-of quartz, charged with every indication as regards minerals, bat scarcely anything hat been done on it yet, so that its .value is not yet ascertained. Next week we. shall sea more about it. lam cleaning out an intermediate level from the Otago flat winze east to get in under where Mr James got his patch of gold in the Otago ' section, where I hope to find the con-, tinuation of that run of gold. It will take a few days more before 1 shall be able to start sinking a winze in the bottom of this intermediate level. No. 1 old level.: I am putting up a rise through the old stopes to Bee if I can find any leaders either on the foot or hangingwalis. This rise will also give ventilation to drive top of Capt. Richards' rise, where we are still driving west with just the same results as last report.—T.B. Hicks." , HAUBAKI (KARANGAHAKE). The manager reports:—The main tunnel is in 108 feet. The country is much better to work, and the men-have-made good progress during the last week. The No. 3 reef, from which we are getting a large body of stone, is over 4 feet wide, and another reef is coming into it from - the hahgingwall. Gold is frequently seen all along the drive. No. 2 has cut a reef -: . to the eastward of our small one, showing " gold in a fine purple standstoue country.
