OUR MINES.

QUEEN OF BEAUTY

During the week 18 loads from the winze '.; ,at No. 8 level have been treated at the mill, yielding in all 4220zs of amalgam, equal to 7ozb of gold per load. This is I not so rich as some expected, bat it is a . decided, improvement on the last parcel, , which_ gave nearly sozs to the load. . Crushing on dirt from the winze will be resumed on Monday next.' The stoppage was on account of the supply of quartz being insufficient to keep five head employed. The dirt from No. 9 has shown a considerable improvement on the last parcel, though the yield is not expected to reach an ounce per load. The dirt from the seaward side of the shaft at No. 8 level , is shaping for a similar yield to the trial j parcel—about lOdwts tc the load. As the reef is of large size, and the quartz easily obtained, this return should be ■ payable. . CALEDONIAN. During this week the manager has had ' three men cleaning out a drive put in by Mr James in the Otago section, underneath where he got a patch of gold some . years ago in the No. 1 reef. Mr Hicks ' finds that there is a block on the reef above the drire about 30 feet in height which has never been touched. Good mineral is showing in- the stone, both in /, .the.roof of the drive and at the top of the '. block. The stone leoks very promising : for gold, and as the reef is from three toibur feet wide, a large quantity 1 of crushing dirt will be obtainable if it is payable. The country is ' untouched ' below the "drife referred to. and it was „'.. f&NfnTe purpose of sinking on .the.reef.tuat. *'!,:the^drive was cleaned out. The drive ',; r : .westward, on, what is believed to be the reef, from the top 1 of- Captain {v Eichards' .rise, is being pushed ahead. „'.Thereef is about a foot thick, composed ■ Jj."of- sugary, quartz, and shows gold 'when-.'•j-iieyer broken down. There is 100 feet yet 'Ht-to drive here before the Crown boundary ■!"is reached, and about 100 feet of backs, ' so.this drive will be pushed on. By '■'. putting a crosscut from this drive to the T- 'No. 2 reef, the Crowu battery level reefs will be intersected, and also a number of other leaders. , In order to afford facilities for the transit of quartz from the above drive tho manager has started to rise.from the No. 1 level. Two leaders ' were cut in this yesterday, showing good blotches of gold. They are about 3 and 2 , .inches thick respectively, and will ,pro- ' bably junction a few feet back from the point at which they were cut. Work on the specimen leader at No. 2 level has been temporarily suspended. The leaders in the drive opened out recently from the prospecting winzeyjir the tootwill of No. 1 reef hare *0J$ P together and formed a large body jt»t;'guar(z about--~9ft on the hanging wall-qfa®o. 2 reof. Only one shot has been fired since the leaders junctioned, and no;gol3vwas, seen in the stone thrown out, though' it showed excellent mineral. The reef "in the winze on -' the hangingwall leader is looking better, the ininefal being of a more favorable class. '," ■ ■ j SOUTHERN CBOSS. ; . ■ Shares in this mine were in demand' yesterday at sljghtly advanced figures! This is a matter for surprise, as the manager informs us there is no change in the mine. Crushing on quartz from the hangingwall leader has been 'suspended, it not being payable. '. .

GOLD EETUBNS. New Whau. —Atkinson and party have crushed 7 loads for 6ozs lOdwts gold.
