OUR MINES.
KTTJRANUI HILL
The stopes on the Junction and the hangingwall leaders continue to produce a larfte quantity of crushing dirt. Some good colors of gold have been seen in the hangingwall leader, and also a little in the Junction reef. The quartz is ''expected to yield about the same as last crushing, which was just payable. The drive on the same leader (but in the Loßg Drive section) from the Albion crosscut is being pushed ahead. The leader here is very promising looking, and varies in size from 6 inches to 2 feet. When this drive is extended to the All Nations shaft, a block about 500 ft. in length will be opened up, which should produce a large amount of payable dirt, | as this leader has proved a good one above the Beaoh level in the Long Drive, Junction and All Nations section, and appears rather to improve as it goes down. The J drive is now in the Long Pj^m section, but when it . is JU^^Hj on into the Junction, Jtfri^^^H
where the late good crushing was obtainedthe manager thinks it will improve. At ,the Beacb lovel, stoping is in progress on a,leader in "the foofcwall of the Junction reef, and this seems to improve as it is worked upwards. Two men are also driving onMhe Moanatairi No. 9 reef in Kelly's section. There is a fine body of quartz-about four feet thick here, and colors of gold are seen in it occasionally. Crushing will be started on Monday next with the full force of stamps. A good supply of quartz is now stacked at the mill. CALEDONIAN. - The manager reports as follows for last week : —The winze on the footwall of No. 1 reef, No. 2 level, is now down 25ft, and hag come-on the hanging wall of N6T2' reef, which* is very hard and hungrylooking. I have opened oat a drive east at bottom of winze on the leaders, and gold is seen in them every breaking dowa. 6lbs of good stone came from here th;is week. Specimen leader, east of No. j 2 chamber, is not improved, is now in soft country, and has functioned with the black clay laying on No. 2 reef, which I expect will cut it off.. Winze on haugingwall leader: The leader,has opened out to ; fully 3 feet in thickness, and showing more mineral; no other change. No. 1 old level: Trial lot of 16 loads is now going througfcfrotn leaders and old slopes, ! which is shaping very poor; am afraid it is not payable. There is an improvement in the drive at the top of the rise. The reef is still very large. Colors of gold have been seen most days when broken down, and yesterday several pounds: of really stone came to hand from here. ] I am in, hopes of being able to pick up the Cure run of gold somewhere here yet. '— T. B. Hicks. ' ALBION (OTANUI). Two men are engaged driving for the Eureka^ reef, which tliey expect to intersect in less than a hundred feet. The drive is in about twenty feet, but the country is now rather tight. BONANZA (OTANUI). •--The men are driving for the "Eureka reef, but expect to cut the Anglo-Maori leader before touching the Eureka. They are in excellent country, abounding in mineral and black veins.
YOUNG COLONIAL (WAIHI). ;
The first return from this mine has reached the Thames, and was deposited today at the Bank of J^ew Zealand. Since the battery was started 65| tons of quartz have been treated for the?, yield of 50ozs 13dwts retorted;gold, or att average of about 15dwls to the ton. This is not sq good as the trial lot, but should be payable, as the reef is of very large size, ■ " ; ■''■■. :; " \': ■' •'-. ~i I - '"'
