BELF-LOYE; ■>-. When our memory^ lays before ub -: . AH our actions of the past, And with stern upbraiding shows us 'Mongat good deeds how-few are classed, Conscience smites us, and a feeling Full of shame steals o'er our xnind, ' That we should have beento others So unloving, harsh, unkind. ( Often when a loving action Would have healed some aching heart, When a few sweet words of kindness Would have lessened sorrow's smart; When we might have to a comrade Lent a friendly helping hand, v We have closed our oyeß, and coldly And unheeding by would stand. Oh! amongst us on this planet Love of self prevails too far, Self-enjoyment far too often Choose wo as onr guiding .star, j v Yes, while many heartsare aching, With their weight of caro and griof, We pursue our selfish pleasures, Though we could afford relief. Can't we be a little kinder Unto those with whom we live ? Can't we be more gentle, loving, And more ready aid to give ? Gentle words and looks work wonders On. an aching, troubled mind; These then give, and may our actions To our fellow-men be kind!
