OUR MINES.
QUEEN OF BEAUTY,
Some gcod specimen stone "was :ob* tamed late yesterday afternoon from the bottom of the winze, 33ffc below No. 8.. level. Some of the pieces are especially rich, being fully balf gold; while the precious metal continues of a coarse pnd leafy nature. This parcel of stone is by far the richest yet .obtained. The manager thin'fs a quantity of gocd store must have gone a*ay with the general dirt, as there was some water iv the bottom of the winze, and the men only discovered the gold whea removing tha quartz. At No. 9 level the drive is ia 63 feet. The reef continues abpu.t, the.same, but there is yet plenty of time for it to improve before the junction is reached. A large,, quantity of quartz is accumulating in the hoppers, so that there will be something to start upon wnen crushing is re3umed. [A few good stone were also got in taking r. down the reef in the winze to-day.] f MOANATAIRI.
The manager reports as follows: — " Tunnel level, drive S.W. of No.l N.W. crosscut, on No. 3: The leader, which is now six inches thick in face of drive, has improved in appearance since last reported on. Colors of gold were obtained from it yesterday. No. 9 hangingwall branch lead has produced 50 "pounds of picked stone (some of which are very good) during the week. The lead will average two inches in thickness. Eedan section, 80 feet level: The lead has not been taken down since my last; shall do next week. Heldt's section : The stopes above 132 ft level have yielded a little goldbearing stone during the week. Nonpareil section, 215 ft. level: The progress in drive has been materially impeded this week, caused by a heavy discharge of gas and foul air from an old drive and winze we came in contact with. We have fixed air-pipes from the Italian shaft to within j£ few feet of face of crosscut. lam expecting now to overcome the gas difficulty at" (his point. The Morning Star leaders are producing remunerative stuff.—J. G-. Vivian." - - SOUTHERN CROSS. Crushing was resumed at the Alburma mill on Saturday, the quartz being from the stopes on the hangingwall leader. 16 is expected to be payable, though no gold has been seen in taking it out. In the drive on the main reef at the intermediate level, there is about 2ft of quartz showing in the face, but it does not look promising enough to save. The drive seaward on the same reef at the level is being pushed ahead, and a gooflß/ looking class of country is met with, though the reef as yet has^ shown no gold. The country here is entirely unworked, so if any payablo quartz is found it is; likely to be lasting.
THAMES DEEP LEVEL TRIBUTE COMPANY. A fair start has now been made with the drive at the 500 feet level, the face being in about 14 feet from the chamber, and in a good class of sandstone. The country is getting dryer, and the pumps are now easily keeping the water in check. The manager intends to reduce the water below the 500 feefc level, but he will first push on the crosscut to the reef and drain it. - . • ■■■■. ■" GOLD KETUBNS. Moanataibi.—Ousley and party hay» treated a parcel of quartz at the company's mill for the return of 3ozs 2dwts gold.
