There were 3570 persons employed on the New Zealand working railways at the end of March, 1882, as compared with 3205 in 1881, an increase of 365. They were thus distributed: Hurunui, Bluff, 2359 ; Auckland, 398; Wellington, 220; Wanganui, 208; Napier, 111; Taranaki, 94; Nelson, 37; Picton, 34; Westport, 33; Grevmouth, 22; Whangarei, 13. Greymouth is the only section on which there has been bo increase in the number of employees. Seventeen persons were killed, and 49 injured on the New Zealand railways last year. Of these the deaths of three passengers, and three employees were caused by their own misconduct or want of care, eleven passengers and six employees being injured under similar circumstances, through causes beyond their own control. Two passengers were injured, but not killed, through causes beyond their own control, but three employees were killed and fourteen injured. Eight persons were injured on the level crossings, but none killed. Seven trespassers were killed, and one injured. The Public Petition Committee recoramend in answer to the Mayor of Thames, petition re railway that it be referred to the Government for consideration.
