The Captain of the Easter Hill reports re the drowning of Thomas that the vessel was shipping heavy seas. Thomas was not missed until the second mate mustered hands to set the maintopniast staysail.
Johnny Hall made a pathetic speech at the theatre on Saturday. He said the season had been an unprofitable one, and he bad found it impossible to make headway against other attracsions. He takes a benefit on Wednesday.
2440 persons were present at the Zulu War panorama on Saturday afternoon.
* The following particulars re the suicide of a natire at Mongonui have transpired. The cutter Mahurangi left Awanui with a number of natives from Kaitaia. One of them named Eata Puki got to Ohira tb« same evening; and at twelve o'clock the natives were all on board. In the morning Eata was missing, and the boat was still alongside. Search was made on the beach, but there was no sign of footsteps. It was known that the Maori could not switn. It appears that some time past j bis native has been in low spirits on account of some irregularities on his wife's part, and this is supposed to be the reason why he committed the rash act. A man, named Hawthorne was killed by a log rolling over him at TV hangaroa. At the Police Court this morning, Duf'ly, Troy, andßowden were committed for trial for forgery. On Saturday night a man named J. W. Ball, residing in Upper Queen street, fell down the back steps of his house. He never recovered consciousness; and died on Sunday afternoon.
A woman in Parnell overlaid her child yesternight.
