OH, GIVE ME BUT A DREAM!
Oh, give me but a dream to-night Of yonng life's happy hours, When as a child I wandered free Through stmny haunts and bowers, Oh, days long flown, come back again, That I once more may seem As gay and light, this lonely night, If only in a dream ? Oh, givo mo but a droam to-night! My sad heart wildly throbs; But for its answer only comes Hot tears and wailing sobs. For years agone have borne away, Upon their restless stream, Tlie friends of yore who come no more, Not even in a dream. Oh, givo mo but a dream to-night! Jly words unheeded fall; For childhood's scenes were brighter far Than time can e'er recall. But hope's fond star shines brighter now, And in each silent beam ' A sacred hand points to a land ■ That's truth and not a dream. One long, sweet droam is all I aak y Of bygone days so bright; Oh, give my lonely, longing heart One happy dream to-night.
