OAMARU.
This day. . The body of a woman partly dressed was found in the creek near Peebles yes* terday by a man employed on the water race. The body was identified as that of the wife of Alexander Beattie. Deceased and her husband were not living on good terms, and about a month ago Beattie was arrested and bound ovei to keep the peace for threatening to burn the house of a neighbour where he found his wife. On returning home after being released he found his wife had disappeared, and she had not since been heard of. An inquest was held to«day, a jury empannelled, and the evidence went'to show that when the woman was taken out of the water a handkerchief was found to be tightly tied round her neck and there was a wound in her throat and a bruise on the face. A portion of her dress also had blood stains on it. The police asked for an adjournment.
