CALEDONIAN.
The manager broke down the specimen leader in the chamber|at No. 2 level last night and this morning, aad obtained about 40lbs of good picked stone. A good show of gold is still left in the face. A few good stone have also been obtained from one of the leaders in the prospecting winze, since yesterday. The manager believes that these leaders and the one in the chamber are identical, but as the two points are about 70 feet apart, it will be some time before this question is settled definitely. He is also of opinion that the specimen leader met with in the. chamber at No. 2 is identical with the specimen leader which yielded so well in the levels above. NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL. The manager stopped work in the winze on Thursday, as it is now down the full depth required. Since the last haul of 201bs of picked stone was obtained, he has broken down about 2ft of the leader. The stone showed good colors and dabs of gold throughout, but none of it was rich enough to pick out. He has put the men to clean out another winze on the same leader 90ft east of the crosscut. The current of air which was playing through the winze west of tke shaft has been turned in the opposite direction by means of bags, which has Riven good ventilation. There were two winzes sunk on the Beach leader, east of the shaft, and the one the manager has iv hand is the second one. The first is about 20 feet west of the second, and was only sank about 25ft. A drive was then put in to winze No. 2, and the block stoped up to No. 3 level. So far as the plan shows, this is all the work done upon this leader east of the shaft below No. 3 level. No.'2 winze is marked on the plan as being sunk 30ft, but Mr Clark thinks it is down 70. He, therefore, intendi to clean it out to the
bottom, and sink it to a depth of 80ft When the shaft is finished he will put in a drive to connect with this wiuze, and thus open a large block on the leader, besides insuring ventilation for second one.. Below No. 3 level there is a block of fully 500 feet of this leader standing intact east of the shaft, and as this end of the mine has always hitherto proved the richest, there is every reason to suppose that it will be payable. Besides the little bit of stoping mentioned above, the work recently done on the Beach leader west of the shaft, and a block of 100 feet in length and not more than 30 feet in height stoped out of the No. 2 reef, the mine below No. 3 level is entirely virgin ground. It will also be remembered that Mr Clark cleaned out a winze en No. 2 reef west of the shaft, and after sinking a few feet upon it, left it. A good reef was then- showing in the bottom, carrying gold, which augers well for the payableness of this leader at No. 4 level. The.contractors for sinking the shaft are getting into a little better class of country. The work of shifting the winding engine will be commenced as soon as possible, a man being engaged yesterday clearing away a portion of the hill at the back of the manager's office, which will be removed to make room for tha engine house. The new winding rope, which was telegraphed for to' Sydney .three weeks ago, haa arrived, but the poppet legs, which should have mm on. the ground on Monday last, have uot yet turned up. . :
THAMES DEEP LEVEL TBIBU-fIT COMPANY. The water has again .been reduced to the 500 feet level., but as a ne<v set of lifts will have to be connected before the water can be reduced any further, pump* ing will be kept up for a few days till the ground around has drained a . little. There is a large amount of gas in the shaft, so much that the men would not be able to work as low as the 500 ft level. When the water was down to here before, the manager made a hole from the air shaft to the chamber by means of a charge of dynamite, but this is evidently not large enough to drive out the-gas. Some of the men were employed yesterday making this hole larger, so that by the time the country gets a little dryer, the gas should be sufficiently dispelled' to allow the clack valve to be: repaired and the other set of lifts connected. Work has again been started in two of the winzes being sunk on the main reef from the 400 ft level. . WAIOTAHI. The manager retorted the amalgam accumulated during the month this morning for the payable return of 2790z8 sdwts retorted gold, for which2o9 t'onsof general dirt have been put through the mill.
