Summary of the Week.

Owing to the holiday season, a lull has taken place in mining matters both on the. „ Thames and in the Upper Country dil* tricts. During last week, nearly all the batteries were kept employed on Christmaa crushings, and a large amount. of „ gold came to hand, but most of the mills > are now silent, and some of the mines hare temporarily ceased work.! The Golden Crown mine, manager .is.. having the boiler thoroughly overhauled nnd repaired, and the mill is also stopped, ; but will probably start again next week. The great mining event of the week has been the starting of the Queen of Beauty * Pump. The Waiotahi mine has cleaned up for another good return, and the yield { from the Kuranui Hill is also encouraging. No news of importance has come to hand ■' from the other mines, but we hare no s doubt but that as soon as the;holidays are over, and the excitement of race meetings, Ac, has died away, more interest will De shown in mining matters. Mining matters in the Upper Country are also dull. Young Colonial scrip, we are informed, are going upi again, probably owing to the rumor that their reef had been cut in the Martha company's ground. Should this rumor. turn out correct, it will enhance the value of the former company's shares, as most likely the famous Prospectors' reef will be nut if the present drive is carried on some distance further
