This day.
A twelve roomed house on the Terrace belonging to Mr J. H. Wallace, and occu* pied by Mrs Weedon, was burned down early this morning. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire. The building was insured in the National office for £800, and the furniture in the Imperial also for £800.
Wakelin's mill, at Grey town, was burnt down last night. It was insured for £450 in the New Zealand. The mill was valued a* £1600. ;
Heain, the champion sculler, leaves for Auckland in a day or two to take part in the regatta there.
The ships Piako and Pleone sailed for London this morning with full cargoes. Friday.
Fatal Railway Accident.
A telegram received this evening from Mr ilanny, Manager of Railways in Christchurch, states that an engine and seven waggons of the south goods train to Clifton left therails one mile north of Kaiheka. The fireman, J. Woodman, was killed; the driver, Mr Carter, was bruised; and the lumper slightly injured. Considerable damage was done to the road, which is being cleared as quickly as possible. The cause of the accident is as yet unknown.
