Thk Governor, in exercise and pursuance of the powers under " The Customs and Excise Duties Act, 1881," and by Order in Council, may from time to time specify the articles on which a Drawback of doty paid on importation into" New Zealand may be allowed. By a late Gazette an order has been issued which comes into force on and after the first of next month* The following are some of the articles mentioned, and the amount of drawback to be allowed:—Ale, porter, beer of all sorts, cider and Perry in bottle, Is 6d,and in bulk Is 3d, per gallon; almonds, in the shell, 2d per lb; almonds, shelled, other than Barbary, Sicily, or French, 3d per lb ; ammunition-—sporting powder, 6d per lb; apples, dried, Id per lb; bacon, 2d per lb; bicarbonate of soda, Is per cwt; biscuits, plain and unsweetened, 3d per cwt; biscuits, fancy, 2d per lb; boiled sugars, comfits, lozenges, Scotch mixtures, and sugar candy, 2d per lb; boots and shoes —Men's, JNo, 6 and upwards, 12s per dozen pairs; youths', "Nos. Ito 5,10s do; boys', Nos. 10 to 13, 6s do; women's, No. 3 and upwards, 8s do; girls', Nos. 10 to 2, 6s do; girls', Nos. 7 to 9, 5s do; children's, Nos. 0 to 6, and slippers, 2s do; women's lasting and stuff boots, without military heels, 5s do; goloshes of all kinds, 2s 6d ; slippers without military heels, other, than children's, 3s do; candied peel, 3d per lb; candles, tallow, |d do; candles, other than tallow, l|d do; caps, percussion, Is per thousand ; cards, playing, 6d per pack; cement, Is per barrel; chalk, Is per cwt; chocolate, 3d per lb ; cocoa, 3d per lb; cocoa beans, Id, do ; coffee, raw, 3d do; composition, piping, 3s 6d per cwt; corn flour, Is per 100 lb; cordage, 5s per cwt; cream of tartar, Id per cwt; doors, plain, 2* each ; doors, glazed with ornamental glass, 4s do; fish, dried, pickled, or salted, 2s- per cwt; fish, potted and preserved, Id per lb or reputed package of that weight, and so in proportion for packages of greater or less reputed weight; fruits, bottled, is per dozen; fruits, dried, 2d per lb; glass, crown, sheet, and common window, 2s per 100 feet super.; glucose, |d per lb; &rain and pulse of every kind, not otherwise described, 9d per 100 lb; grain and pulse of every kind, not otherwise described, when ground or in any way manufactured, Is do; hams, 2d per lb; hops, 6d do; iron fencing wire, staples and standards, straining posts and apparatus, Is per cwt; iron gates and gate posts, 4s do; iron, galvanised, corrugated sheets, ridging, guttering, spouting, washers, screws and nails, 2s do j iron galvanised tiles and rivets, Is do; iron tanks, 5s each; iron tanks of and under 200 gallons, 2s 6d do j jams, jellies, marmalade, and preserves, l|d per ib or reputed package of that weight, and so in proportion for packages of greater or less reputed weight; lead piping, 3s 6d per cwt; leather, sole, £d per lb; leather, other kinds, Id do; maize, 8d per 100 lb ; maizena, Is do ; malt, 2s per bushel; mustard, Id per lb; nails, iron, 2s per cwt; naptha, 6d per gallon; nuts of all kinds except cocoanuts, 2d per lb; oil, mineral, 6d per gallon; oil, vegetable, in bulk (except olive, palm, and eandlenut), 6d do; oil not otherwise described, 6d do; paints and colours mixed ready for use, 2s per cwt; paper bags, 5s do; paper, wrapping, brown, 2s do; paper, wrapping, other kinds, 2s 3d do; pearl barley, Is do; peas, split, Is do; pepper and pimento, unground, Is per lb j pickles, 9d per dozen pints or reputed pints, and in the same proportion for larger or smaller sizes; plaster of Paris, Is per barrel; rice, |d per lb; rope, 5s par cwt; sardines, Id per lb, same as " fob, potted,

Ikj, Returning Officer for one of the Southern districts ffiled to return the writ, which fa his case was transmitted by telegram according to the provisions in the new Act of last session. The Clerk of Writs telegraphed asking an explanation of the delay, and requesting immediate return. The officer replied that he had no writ to return and never bad any, but simply received a telegram instructing him to hold an election, which he did accordingly. The clerk replied that; the telegram, was the writ which he mutt endorse and return forthwith. The officer rejoined that he would be happy to do so, but unfortunately the telegram was no longer in his possession, as he had attached no importance to it: Under these peculiar circumstances, the advice of the law officers has again to be sought as to what is to be done to get out of the difficulty and to validate the election. t Thirb is anew ramour afloat in Wellington that Sir A.
