QUEENS OF BEAUTY.

The mine manager reports '-—East Wednesday the pumps were stopped _for the purpose of making the connections on surface and below. At present date the pit work is completed up to No. 4; all the work connected with the main rods is finished up to No. 2, and the column requires to' be connected to the two plungers at No. 4. and the column staved, which will be done tomorrow, which will complete the work up to N. 2 in the shaft. All the surface works are in progress, and will be in a forward state in a few days. At present all the gear is adrift, getting in the two pinions, which are iv their respective places. The crank has been bored out for a larger pin which is being fitted. The old surface bob has been removed, and the new one is erected in its place. The whole of the work will be in a forward state by the end of the present week, and by that time I will be able to inform you definitely when we will- be ready to start the pumps,, which will be about (say) Wednesday week.—Geobge Black. :

SMILE OFFORTUNE (OWHAROA).

The mine manager reports, under date December 23, as follows:—"I have cleaned up the battery, after running 12 hours per day for three weeks ;. 200 tons of stuff has been reduced for the return of 200ozs retorted gold. In the mine I have been stopiug north and south above the intermediate level; the slopes going south show a great improvement within the last few days, gold showing freely, 10 pounds of, specimens coming from them yesterday afternoon. I believe this' will turn out a valuable block of ground, being intact from the above level to the surface. In the northern end, from which a large proportion of the crushing stuff has came, the stuff for first fortnight was rather poor, but shows an improvement for the titter within the last week, and gives promise of making another rich patch within a short distance; and as there is a stretch of 350 feet on the line of all the reefs in your mine, from this face to the Lucky Hit boundary, entirely unpros-1 pected. I would recommend the intermediate level being pushed ahead, as the ground is easily worked, and so far contains payable gold, with every probability of containing as rich crushing stuff as has ever came from the mine. I have sunk a winze from the intermediate level gO feet, but it having commenced to make water, I have stopped until the low level is Up under it, which will take about 20 feet of driving. The stuff from the winze shaped very well when going, through the battery, and when connected with tha low level will open up a good block of ground on the late tributers run ofrgold. The battery is in gnod working order, the new turbine going at any speed desired, and using very little water when compared with the old one.—John Mooee." , .'" -' ' . '... " .... ", '• /■.•
