WAITEKAURI.

(feom a cobbespondent.)

Waitekaubi, Dec. 23, 1881

Cleaning up and retorting for the Waitekatjei No. 3 took place yesterday, and the return, although payable, was a disappointment to a good many, a« a much . larger one was expected. The quantity of dirt crushed was 110 tons, and it yielded 88ozs of gold. The stuff now coming to hand from the slopes in this mine is of a far better quality, and as the tribute party in the block above the No. 3 workings left good gold under their drive, it may reasonably be expected that this mine will give good returns in future. Butler and party hare retorted for the splendid return of 12820zs of gold from 300 tons of dirt. - A much larger return than this would have came to hand, but the battery has had a lot of stoppages. This party are still getting rich stuff from their hangingwall reef, and a large block of ground remains yet to be worked out. This run of gold has not yet been cut in the No. 3, but the manager is driving on the reef for that purpose. v The Waitekaubi Company started crushing their own dirt this week, and the show on the plates is very good, about 3oass to the ton being expected. The dirt is from the same reef that Butler and party are working on, and it maintains its character for, richness the whole leDgth that it has been worked on. JwriN-TiME.—The crosscut in this j v mine is now in about 60 feet, and the reef j should be met with very soon., The manager has had a very hard bar to get through, which has made the work slow, but is now in good country, carryinft j * reins of quartz showing gold. •fi Cboww.—The crosscut in this mine is now in about 50 feet, and the country has been very hard, but shows a change for the better in the face.

Waitekattbi Extended-—Driving on the reef is still being continued by contract and a distance of 60 feet has been driven. The reef has not yet been broken down, but has been pierced in a number of places, and gives excellent prospects the whole distance.

Caledonian.—The contractors are making good headway in this* mine, and the'tunnel is now in 150 feet. The Just in Time reef is expected to be met within this drive very soon. Moonstohe;—The manager is engaged prospecting the new reef he found lately, and has how got into a better class of country, it is not so broken as that in which the reef was found. The quartz has a very promising appearance, and a good find may be expected in this favorite ground. Messrs Mason and Wood have crushed about 121bs of stone from the Young New ZiALAND for the return of 4ozs lOdwts retorted gold. ' . No work of any consequence will be done here till after the holidays as all of the " non-resident" voters are homeward bound (to the Thames,)
