Ths new bridge across the Hape Creek at' the corner of Willoughby and Rjlleston streets is rapidly approaching completion, and is expected to be finished by the New Year. The work is being carried out most satisfactorily by the sub-contractors Messrs Maingaj and Dare, from plans and specifications framed by the County Engineer, Mr Alexander Aitlfen.... The structure is 25 feet ' in length, and 18 feet broad, and the planking is of kauri 9 x 3. The piles on which the bridge is sustained hare been sunk a distance of 7ft 6in, and are morticed at the bottom. Tho sinking o£ these piles was attended with considerable difficulty, as the largo amount of water coming down the creek flooded the foundation, and an rjector was kept continually at work until the completion of this important part of the work. A ielegbam from Wellington aays : —Yea* terday aflernoon informations under the Gaming and Lutterios Act were laid against some of the gentlemen who were engaged in sweeps on the Hutfc racecourse on the 30th ult. Sir Wax. fitzherbert, Speaker of the Council, and President of the Wellington Rac'ng Club, is, it is understood, one of those summoned. The cases will bo heard on Friday. Last evening, the talented concert and burlesque opera company organised by Mdlle. Murielle, performed at the Academy of Music to a fair houao. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed throughout the performance, and several of-'thb leading members of the company Mdlle. Murielle, Marshall, and Campbell had to submit to encores. The programme included arias, ballads, and a ventriloquial entertainment, in which Mr Brabazon scored a decided success, being vociferously encored for bis effoiis. In consequence of there being no boat to Auckland to-morrow, and the bad houses they have baen favored with, the company will not perform this evening. It is probable that F. Whitaker, Eeq, Attorney-General, and Mr John Shcehau, M.H.R., will visit the Thames during the present week. Thbee pupils from the Thames High School were recently sent to compete in the Civil Service examination, and yesterday the Head Master, Mr Adams received the gratifying intelligence that all three had successfully passed the ordeal. Of the lads, Masters Sums and Keary passed the junior examination, while Master Adams (son of the Head Master) passed both the senior and junior. This should be very gratifying to parents having children at the school, as it proves incontestably the very superior and thorough education given at the High School, and is a result of which the Head Master and Board of Governors may feel justly proud. We believe Master Adams is the first lad from the Thames who has succeeded in passing the Senior Civil Service examination. The usual Christmas Examination at the school is now proceeding, and is being conducted by Mr Adams, assisted by several of the Governors. On Thursday afternoon the presentation of prizes by the
Mayoress will take place, when the Governors will be pleased to see a good attendance of the public. Thb Naval Cadets will p trade for inspection to-morrow evening at 7 p.m. The Thames Scottish Battalion are notified that the usual inspection by Major Withers takes place on Thursday evening at 7 sharp. On the 22nd, 23rd, and 21 inst., Mr John Lsydon will sell a large quantity of goods seasonable for 'Xinas, at his Grrahamatown auction mart. At a meeting at Hokitika, Mr Fitzgerald j was asked to define " Conservative" and " Liberal," and he replied the Conservative is a man in office who intends stopping there, and the Liberal is a man who is trying to turn him out.
