Mr C. B. Blackett, the well known chemist, of Melbourne, makes what appears to be a valuable suggestion in the interest of human life and the fire insurance companies. He says: "From time to time serious gas explosions have taken place in Melbourne and other places. It would seem that in most instances the cause of the leakage of gas is to be attributed to the ' water-slide.' Several years ago this danger presented itself to me. On reflecting upon it, I came to the conclusion that water was not the right fluid to use, on account of its rapidly evaporating especially during hot weather. I therefore substituted glycerine, which, instead of evaporating, actually absorbs moisture. The crude glycerine is cheap, and answers perfectly well." The "Farmers' Fertilizing Bone Company" is the name of the institution ; but why are farmers' bones any more fertilzin than the bones of other creatures ?
