[ADVBETI-EMENX.] ELECTORAL.—MR J. SHEEHAN. (Per favour of the Evening Star.) f CITIZENS and Fellow Electors.-The \J late address of Mr Sheehan is simply begging the question, as if it were a matter of life and death to him— appealing to our sympathies and generosity as if his living depended upon his being returned, as if his billet as Native Land Agent depended upon bis being a member of the House. Recapitulating his actions towards us for the last twelve •or fourteen years Every little good his 1 duties required him to do for us (for j which I presume he was paid) was laid before us in glowing language, and before he was finished, I was for the time almost persuaded that our very existence as a town, as « community, depended upon the past action of the lecturer, but upon reflection and again reading the said lecture, I came to the conclusion that it was a clever piece of sophistry—language of an orator to hide his thoughts, like a lawyer w»ll up in his business, who can make the most criminal appear the most innocent or vice versa. Who but recollects the bounce that took so well in the Theatre Royal some three years ago when he affirmed so confidently that he would yet " euchre " those land speculators—that be would yet " win the day," and none would purchase native lands but the State. Who but recollects the bounce (from the hustings when he and Grey were elected unopposed) that he would have the would-be murderer of McWilliams in less than 24 hours safely lodged in custody. It is now more than .24 months ago, and he is still at large. Is such claptrap going to take the Thames people lor ever ? I tbiuk not. By electing John Sbeehan, we as a community endorse bis actions re the Patetere and other native lands, and lend ourselves to assist the interests of his employers, the land jobbers, to the injury of ourselves as a people. Fellow electors —God save us from such a calamity.—l am, &c, Electob.
[advebtisement.J mO THE SPBIGHTITBB! Fools to assert that mortals dare not quaff, The flowing bowl in measure and in season; At your mad ravings wise men only laugh, Ravings devoid alike of sense and reason. Because some drink too deep should AfcL abstain ? Ridiculous! You might as'well maintain*, That since the glutton at the feast, Doth gormandize far worse than any beast, And over-load his stomach at the treat, You might as well assert—"-Men should not eat." Some lavish all on dress to heighten beauty ! Pray, for that cause, is nakedness our duty ? Oh idols far too prejudiced to see The line 'twixt medium and extremity. If you have brains enough to comprehend A simp?e Scripture narrative ; attend— Once at a wedding of the unfriended poor, The blessed Saviour chanced to pass the door. He entered! gazed around!! no cheering draft Save water only by each guest was quaffed. When, in a moment, to inspire their hearts, With all the joys the ruby grape imparts, He ! the Redeemer!! Christ!!! the Lord Divine!!! Transformed the water into generous wine. Hear this, ye fanatics, nor dare to scan I The wisdom of your Saviour. In the dust Confess your folly; own His ways are just, And act like men of reason—if you can. Ecce Signum. Entertainment PRELIMINARY NOTICE.
