PUNGAREHU.

This day.

All the natives were mustered outside Parihaka this morning, and only those belonging to the place were permitted to re-enter. Five hundred and eighty, of whom two-thirds were women and children, were drafted in. Sixty-six were detained, and 16 from Parapara were also selected, their houses being pulled down, all having only four inhabitants cowing to earth. Tohu's meeting house was. razed to the ground. At four o'clock over 50 drays and spring carts, three buggies, and one brake collected outside the Tillage, besides a quantity of saddles. Ti toko war v is still in solitary confinement in irons. It is said Hakarai and others have returned to Parihaka; a search will be made. The Taranaki Cavalry are here again. The stockade is being pushed on. Mr Bryce leaves on Friday to address his constituents. Some doubts are expressed as to the wisdom of searching all whares promiscuously. Some well known friendly natives have been so treated, and the effect upon them is considered unsatisfactory. Constable Josiah Oakley died in the Hospital at New Plymouth. He was a compositor on the Evening Post some years ago. The Hauraki with the Palmerston and Fielding Volunteers moved off Bahotu at noon. These corps should have marched from here to New Plymouth and rejoined their own corps at Wanganui instead of four days' extra pay and passage. They are not there yet. One hundred A.C. leave Parihaka to reinforce the Manaia contingent tomorrow.
