Thames Borough Council.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Thames Borough Council took place last evening in the usual place. His Worship the Mayor presided, and there were present: Crs. Mennie, Veale, Osborne> McCullough, Marshall, Bawden, and McGowan. COMPKNSATION. A claim for £10 compensation for the passage of the Karaka Creek through his allotment, was made by Mr Cyprian Eowe. The matter was deferred.in order that the Town Clerk should advertise for any other, claims for compensation in respect of such creek. KOAD REQUESTED. The inhabitants ot Bird-in-Hand Hill wrote (per Mr Law) requesting the Council to construct a road to communicate with the Flat.

Cr McCulio.ugh said he had seen the line of road referred 10, and that a very little outlay would render it of use to the people of the Bird in Hand Hill.—Keferred to the Works Committee.

The matter was refrrred to the Works Committee. NEW FOOTPATH. Four residents in Walter streetMessrs Denby, Campbell, Wallis, and Edwards—requested a gravelled footpath in front of their domiciles on the usual terms, and also that the water-table should be repaired.—The Foreman of Works was instructed to prepare a plan and estimate for consideration at next meeting. MORE WATEB. An application was made by Mr John Grigg to have water laid on to his premises with an inch connection. The object was to flush a drain. Or Osborne said Mr Grigg's attention should be drawn to a bye-law prohibiting the Council from acceeding to the request. Eventually on the amendment proposed by Cr Bawden, the matter was referred to the Water Supply Committee. . YACCItfATION. Dr M. H. Payne wrote stating that he had been instructed by Government to arrange for a visit to the public schools to vaccinate children who had not already been vaccinated, and requested permission to inspect the Orphanage scholars, and askihg when would be the most suitable occasion.—-Referred to the Orphanage Committee.

BEFUKD. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary enclosing a copy of "the report of the Public Petitions Committee in regard to the case of Mr S. Stepbenson's license, favourable to the refund of the sum of £40.—Reply sent to Government read.

THE SPABBOYTS. From A. Connon, asking permission to discharge firearms in Mackay Street during the strawberry season to frighten sparrows—Granted. From the Shortland Saw Mill Co., re street piling of creek.—Referred to Works Committee. ■

A MISTAKE. Mr E. N. Smith wrote admitting he had committed an error in regard to the roof the Orphanage. Mr Smith asked leave of the Council to speak in his own defence. Some discussion followed, and^ the applicant was permitted to explaiq the cause of the mistake. *

Mr Smith stated that he had made 'an oversight in regard to the shingling, being misled by a portion of the specifications, but hadidone the best he could to rectify his mistake 'after, discovering it. He asked the Council,to consider the matter, as he had made nothing for himself after paying expenses, and. the deduction of £12 proposed was unreasonable. ; After considerable discussion, a resolution "that the amount be £10" was carried. BEPOBTS. From the Town Clerk re Mr Plant's application, and the appointment of the Exhibition Committee. i

From the Finance Committee recommending the payment of wages, &c. Adopted. Mr Jeukin wrote asking that a standpipe be erected on the hill side, at the back of Ellis' store. On the motion of Cr McCullough, the letter was referred to the Water Supply Committee, with power to act. He stated that many of the inhabitants were much inconvenienced in having to carry their water from the standpipe on the road, and that the request should be granted. The Mayor stated that he had received a communication, but did not know from whom, in reference to a projected alteration in the route of the Thames Valley and Rotorua line.

Cr McCullough proposed that a subcommittee be appointed to consider the matter.

Cr MeGowan wished to know more about the matter before he acted oa a sub-committee. At whose request was the matter brought up, and for whose benefit.

Cr McCullough said he had already taken steps in the matter of the branch, line from* Kopu to|Morrineville, but was not averse to a committee© being formed. He wasrquite willing to help every movement made with the object of securing the Thames and Waikato .railways. He moved that the Mayor, Crs McCullough, Marshall, Osborne, Veale, and McGowan be a subcommittee to enquire into the matter, and to urge on the Government the completion of the line, the County: Council to be asked to co-operate.

Or McCullough asked leave to postpone the consideration of his motion re an engineer. The Town Clerk reported that he had called a meeting of the Gas Committee, but only one or two members attended, and those not at the appointed hour. Cr McCullough stated he had already taken steps to secure information for the use of the Committee. On the motion of Cr MeCullough Mr D. E,. Gellion was appointed Auditor, vice Captain Skene, deceased. A CHANGE.' Cr McGowan gave notice that he should move to have his name erased from the list of Councillors comprising the Works Committee, and that the name of Cr McCullough be substituted. Cr Osborne gave notice of motion to have Cr Marshall's name added.
