TO THE THAMES ELECTORS.
(Far favour of the Evening Star.) Gentlemen,—Legal professional idiosyncracies being incompatible with faithful Parliamentary representation, crucial tests should alone determine whether the character of a person who so boldly offers himself for five constituencies simultaneously is so exceptionally mentally great, and morally good, as to exceed the gravity of such objections. The odious breath of black and hateful suspicion must not rest upon our delegate. In him humanity must find a champion worthy and capable of defending her cause. To him philanthrophy will confide the high trust of preaching her mission upon earth. In him oppression and wrong must find an enemy, whose moral force will threaten their confusion, and ultimately achieve their complete overthrow, while tyrants, trembling at the bare mention of his name, will feel their power insecure. Is our legal candidate such a man? Is he wise, and great, and virtuous P Is he remarkable for learning, for temperance, for charity,- for purity? Does he set an example of manliness, of disinterestedness, of regard to the interests of his fellow creatures, of superiority to low and grovelling passions and pursuits? Is there anything about him to inspire unusual love, or reverence, or esteem. Is there anything about him to entitle him to the confidence of the people—anything to give the people assurance that he will manage the affairs of the country with wisdom, prudence, integrity, and understanding? Is there not, on the contrary, in bis character everything to create contempt? Is he not remarkable for sacrificing the interests of the poor and needy, the laborer, and wealth producer, to the selfishness and greed of the land shark and the capitalist.—l am, &c, Wm. Hazlett. Thames, Not., 4,1881.
