Im the Legislative Assembly last night, a lengthy debate took place in reference to the Royal Commissioners report on the Milbnrn Creek mine enquiry. Baker, late Minister of Mines, contended that he whs fully entitled to the money he h»id received aud Garrett declared that he had not been connected with the mine for a long time and courted a further inquiry into the matter. The discussion was finally adjourned to Tuesday next. Intelligence has been received that Commodore Wilson has been raised to the | rank of vice Admiral. I Melbourne, Saturday. THE MELBOURNE RAUES. At Flemingtou today it was the fourth day of the Victoria Racine Club's Spring Meeting. Steeplechase (3 miles) won by J. Cuningham's Prima Donna; J. Mor mon's Trumpeter, 2; N. Webb's Himalaya, 3. Eleven horses started for the race, and Prima Donna won easily in 7 minutes 4 seconds.
Canterbury Plate, two and a quarter miles :—O. G. Baldock's Wellinjjton, 1; T. Ivor's Sweetmeat, 2; D. McPherson's Santa Claus, 3. Woodlands and Royal Maid also started. The race concluded with a splendid finish between Wellington and Sweetmeat; time, 4 minutes 8 seconds. -
Thorpe, late teller of the Bank of Victoria, was to day sentenced to two years' imprisonment for embezzlement; but was recommended by the jury to.mercy on account of the great laxity which had prevailed in thp conduct of the bank's business. . ,
