OUR MINES.
Summary of the Week.
Te principal event of the week has been the discovery of payable gold in the Caledonian mine, on the No. 1 reef, which was so successfully worked some yeus ago. This discovery caused a deal of excitement, and on Thursday a number of persons visited the mine... A trial parcel of 5 loads from this reaf, taken out before the haul of picked stone was obtained, has been crushed at the Herald battery for the excellent return of 9ozs 15dwts retorted gold; a yield which will amply repay all expenses, as the reef is in a good class country for working, and the quartz itself is not very hard. The manager of this mine is also, preparing to prospect the No. 2 reef under the Cure shot of gold, end it is the opinion of those who best know the ground in that louality, that something good will be obtained here. The Old Golden Calf has at last got remunerative crushing dirt, and as there is about 500 feet of backs to take out on the reef now being worked, this company will probably, come to the fore ere long. The discovery., of some picked stone in the Southern Cross mine caused a little stir, ia the shares, and this mine has for some time past been on payable dirt. Nothing of importance has occurred in the Albnrnia mine; crushing is proceeding at the battery, but it is not expected to be very good. The * Devon mine is still crushing good quartz; a slight break has occurred in the reef at the intermediate level, but the reef has been picked up again, though ie is considerably smaller. The Kuranui Hill company has started crushing again, but although one parcel is shaping well, the others do not look very good. The Moahatairi is on payable dirt, and the directors have decided to work the mine as at present up to Christmas at any rate. The Waiotahi has had another good return for the month, and this mine is, in fact, the steadiest gold-producer'on the field. The New Golden Crown has cleaned up for another excellent return, . and the scrip, which had fallen during the past fortnight, are again going up. News from the Upper Country is en* couraging, and the trial parcel now being taken from the Young Colonial reef is expected to yield well. The Waihi Company are vigorously pushing ahead their main tunnel, and evidently intend to thoroughly test their ground. Waitekauri scrip are in good favor, especially the Just-in-Tioie, which have steadily advanced in price. The Waitekauri No. 3 Company has started crushing, and the manager thinks he will have no difficulty in producing enough gold to declare a dividend before Christmas. At Owharoa no change is reported; the Smile .of Fortune Company has started crushing, and the return is expected to be. a good one.
