OUR MINES.

SMILE OFFOETUNE (OWHABOA). The manager reports under date 31st October, 1881, as follows :—" Since faking charge of the Smile of Fortune G M.Oo 's property at Owharoa I hare been crush ing for outside tributers with ten head of stamps. We have treated 22 loads for Campbell and party, and 31 loads for Thorns and party, which is beine cleaned up. I have started on a small lot for Bray and party with five head, and five on the. company's quartz. I shfi'l keep five head going on the company's stuff until Mr Adams takes the battery over for repairs, which will be about the end of the week. The other five will be employed till then on tributers' stuff. As we have just started I cannot say anything about the quality of the stuff, but as I have seen gold frequently in breaking il out, I believe it will shape pretty well. In the mine I have had four men employed driving north on the late tributers' inter mediate level, but ns we are blocked up with stuff I have started to take along a leading stope going south. The reef looks well in both ends, but as we are very short of hopper accommodation I won't be able to work much more on the reef until the repairs to the battery have been effected. I believe the tributers have left a large quantity of stuff' on the walls, which will pay the company well for treating. I have started with four men to crosscut from the bottom level ; I expect to cut the reef in about 25 feet of driving. We shall have about 35 feet of backs from this drive to' the tribufers' intermediate level, and beyond this level the reef is intact to the surface. —John H. Mooee."GOLD RETURNS. AIBUfIfNIA. —Probert and party have crushed? 6 loads of quartz for the return of 4ozs 19dw"ts gold. Moanatairi. — Moorcraft and party have crushed 701bs of specimens for the splendid return of 91ozs 18dwts gold.
