County Council Election.
MR W. LANG THORBURN BEFORE THE ELECTORS.
- In compliance with the wishes of a large number of rat&payer of the Kastiugs riding, Mr W. L. Thorburu addressed
his constituents in the Tapu schoolbouse on Saturday evening. About fifty gentlemen were present.
Captain Newby proposed that Mr Ckarles Manuel take the Chair.
Mr Hawkes seconded, and it was carried.
Mr Manuel then took the Chair, and after a few introductory remarks, called upon Mr Thorburo to address the meeting.
Mr i borburn (who on rising was loudly cheered) s»iJ, —Mr Chairman and gentle* men present: Ido not intend to make a long speech. I have the honour to hare been your representative in the County Council for the last five years, and I now come before you for the third time ai soliciting your suffrages. The hobby that I have now in view is the formation of a permanent way from Grahamstown to the County boundary, and that such work will be curried out seems to me to be nearly a certainty. (Hear hear.) I intend also to get the road made and widened to Mercury Bay, and I hope to see a bridle track opened up between Tapu and Mercury Bay I hope also to see a road formed up the Waiomo. The reason is that I am aware of the existence of auriferous quartz in this district, and I am sure that if such a work were carried out, it would result in a spurt in mining matters. These are reasons why I offer myself as a candidate for a third time. But another reason, not least one because last, is, because during the last five years such a kindly feeling has existed between the electors of the Hastings riding and myself; I may' say fur* tber, that while I have been in the Thames County Council not one of my actions as a councillor has been challenged. I am now prepared to answer any questions so long as they are of a local political nature.
A large number of questions wore then asked by several of the electors present, includtng Messrs Hawkes, Carrpn. Jacob* Newby, and Steadman, and answered to the satisfaction of a large majority of the meeting. • Captain Newby proposed the following resolution: " That this meeting having listened with pleasure to Mr Thorburn, is quite satisfied with (he answers given by him to the various questions, and consider him a fit and proper person to represent us for the ensuing term.
Mr Steadman seconded the motion, which was carried amid loud applause.
A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the business. .
