This day. Biddler's house, near Hamilton, was burnt yesterday. Insured for £100 on building and £100 on furniture in the Colonial office.

Stevenson's store at INewton was destroyed by fire at midnight, but the flames were kept from spreading to the adjoining buildings despite insufficient watsr. The loss is estimated at £2,400. Insurances: stock, £I,COO, and building £400, in National.

Abbott's £10,000 sweep on the Melbourne Cup was drawn last night in the presence of 400 members.

Mrßuckland reports at the Haymarket:—Horse market was fairly filled, active, medium draught brougiit from £17 to £32, weight currying hacks and light harness horses £12 to £25, light) hacks £6 to £11; for animals, of good stamp the competition was brisk, and with few exceptions all eutered were disposed of.

Satisfactory prices at Haymarket on Tuesday, 18th iust. Hides brought from 2|d to 3f d per lb, good sheepskins from 4s to 5s 9d each; wool, 7fd! per 1b ; tallow, 21s to 23s perewt. At the Pokeno cattle sale on Monday there was a larger muster of stock than usual, and an improved attendance. The prices obtained were higher than at the larger sales. At Drury on Wednesday ihere was a larger number of cattle yarded than on any previous occasion, and sellers accepted current rates freely, with the result of a slight advance in values over late markets, and all yarded being sold. At Remuera on Wednesday dairy cattle were at previous values, ranging from £5 5s to £9 10s; store cattle in moderate number maintained last week's prices, Fat cattle in moderate number—l2o yarded; prices ranged from 25s to 27s the lOOlbs for good quality, but heavy ship-borne oxen were from 22.3 the lOOlbs. Sheep were abundant, but in request, and maintained their late values. Wethers, in their wool, brought from 15s to 20s; ewes, 14s to 15s 6d \ f shorn wethers, 10s 6d to 12s 9d each; store wethers, 14s each,; fat lambs were plentiful, and' brought from 10s to 18s each; pigs unusually numerous—all classes freely cmpeted for, particularly young stores.
