At Washington, on September 11th, Sergeant Mason, of the 2nd Artillery, while the guard was being changed on Guitean, attempted to shoot the assassin^ but failed. The guards bad drawn lots fop the purpose. Mason will be court martialled, and probably the others concerned. General Sherman referring to the affair, says the law must take its course, else mob law in the frontier States and territories can claim immunity. This is the public opinion also.
