. The first of the gentlemen aspiring for seats ia the County Council at the forthcoming election notifies earns through our columns this evening. Mr Henry Alley, one of our oldest settlers, is a candidate for the Totura riding, and should receive a numerous support.
We are pleased to learn that Mr Aitken, the Hospital Dispenser, is progressing favorably from his late accident, although it is very doubtful if he will be sufficiently recovered to resume his duties at the expiration of his leave of absence, which terminates on the 26th inst.
On dit that one or more actions for libel are likely to result from the publication in laßt week's Observer, and "yesterday's issue of our morning contemporary, of a paragraph reflecting on two of our leading citizens for their conduot at an alleged fracas at the rink.
Thebb was only a moderate attendance at Professor Westell's entertainment last evening. The programme was, however, faithfully gone through to the entire satisfaction of the audienoe. Professor Westen will not now give any performance until Saturday after* afternoon, when there will bj a matinee for school children, and children accompanied by their parents. We believe that the Professor has offered his services to the Hospital Committee for a benefit on betialf of the funds of that institution, and that it will in all probability be accepted. This is a course he has followed for many years in all the towns and cities he has visited, and in almost every case the result has been a considerable sum to the institution on whose behalf the entertainment was given. Mb Samuel Ensoe requires tenders for the erection of a hotel on his allotment adjoining the Good Templar's Hall, in Holieston street. From the plans, it would appear that Mr Ensor contemplates putting up a large and moat commodious building.

Besides the astounding results telegraphed to the Glasgow Company of a four ounce yield to the ton have since been substantiated ; so that, after nil, India may turn out to be the Eldorado one imagined it to be in the days of one's boyhood."
A Mbibouenb correspondent telegraphs that a brisk business was done at the Vi torian betting rooms lately. Canary was extensively backed by his owner to win the Melbourne Cup, in 100's to 3 and 4, up to £8,000.
Thr case against W. G. Ga'rrard for personation —a breach of the Corrupt Practices Preventiou AcL —was heard yesterday at the Police Court, Auckland, before Mr J. E. Macdonald, R,M. The whole of the evidence was taken for the prosecution. No evidence was called for the defence, but Mr Theo. Cooper, who represented the dofendunt, pleaded that the cusohad not been established, because it bad not been shown that although
the accused " brought" the claim to vote tha ho hud "sent" it. Me Cooper fowurda the close ot his address wnxed eloquont, and Lold the Court thut although his nlitmfc might be committed for trial to the Supreme Court, and although the Grand Jury might return a true bi'l, the Judge would quash tha indictment when it canie to a common jury. The Resident Magistrate, in that quiet iuoisive manner which is peculiarly his own on occasionb of this sort, said : '• Mr Cooper, you may rely on it tlut if you cunnot g^t your client out of this scrupe through my. judgment, you cannot through my fears,"
