The Parihaka Meeting.
SPEECH OF TE WHITI.
The following is [a full report of the speech made by Te Whiti at the Parihaka meeting, short mention of which appeared in our issue last evening :—The gods have always been living up to this time. The world was already made by God long ago. These days have come to this generation. The quarrel has come forward to this generation. The wars have come forward to this day. Several generations have passed by, and several troubles have passed by: one has come to us now. The sins of man will be beaten. Thousands of seeds have slipped away, seeds of kumara, seeds of wheat ; all seeds have departed; the seed of Israel has departed. In this day will be made new the quarrelling in ancient times—it will be renewed, as it has always been uplifted in every generation. The quarrel lifted up to this day, it rests on me. The head of the sin will be broken this day. One generation has been brought up in this day. It will not be undone. The heel of Eve was bitten by the serpent. The light will not enter to any man this day. The suu will not shine; darkness shall be over the earth. The largest stars of heaven will not give their light. The strife will not be uplifted from Eve to this day. At my word the fishes wriggle in the sea, the earth shakes, and the sea quivers. The blood of the prophets is lying on the earth, and with every generation. It is not a great nation nor a large hand, that will put down the power this day. It is caused by good. The groat nation and the little nation will diminish this day. There will be no peace in this day. There is no one to sooth my trouble—not until it is finished. The hand of God stretched forth and raised up this generation. If you are cutting a tree it is the hand of man lifts the axe. If left to lie it will be rusted. The hand of Israel lifted our nature. This axe will be sharp, but the other will be left and rusted. It is I who am speaking. The hen's nest is left, and a small child may break the eggs, and the chickens will have no mother to watch them. This talk is as true in this year as it was in ancient time. Do not be frightened. Listen to this word : The trouble wiii be lifted in this day—strife will make it straight. It is the only thing to make it straight. Nothing else will make it straight. It does not matter if thousands stand at Pungarehu, they will be broken. Peace has been on earth by me, but it has not been listened to by the great nations. • If you are vexed about your land come to me—come close. I will not listen to the law, because within my heart I am dark this day. Every year I have been saying, " JBe patient." If it is the spade that is in your hands, strike with it. My heart is dark within me. If the land is black with men it will shake them off. This platform will be always full, from one generation to another. If Pungarehu be be dug with trenches or filled with guns it will be broken—it will not be left for another generation. If the Maoris look for good they will not find it among all the kings on earth. When this happens it will be done in this day. My word will be the law in this day. The law will be straight I say; it will not be turned to north or the south, nor in any direction. There is only us to keep the law, and keep it straight. What I have said is never to look at the height or the strength; it will ali be broken down. There will not be any work of man left, this day— not one good thing by man will be left—it will be all turned away and destroyed. Listen, the strength of man has all departed from the great man. The strong man, the wealthy man, he will not be understood this day. He must come to me. The gun will not be a protection for man. In these days man must not look to the gun, the sword, or the spear for safety. The tomahawk, the sword, will not be left for man this day. Let the man understand; let the kiug understand ; the entrenchment will bs all filled in; the money will not be> left ; the
gun will be gone ; God will be on earth in these days for ever and ever ; the rich and the full man must depart; it will nut be a year but to-day; the strike will be on earth; the spear wiil not be for a man ; every generation must be crushed ; there will not be one left; the man that comes to strike will be killed himself. This hand is small, but every generation will be broken this day. This day will be one of boasting. There is no one will subdue me for I am determined. I am angry. The trouble will be for man, and for all generations. My word will not be turned away from the north io the south. The guv will be broken. The name only of the law that used to be ours is left this day. The sea will dry up, and the four parts of the eurth will shake. Thousands of men at Puogarehu will face this day.
