The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1881.

Tee Liberal demonstration at Leeds has

no doubt called forth the Conservative one at Newcastle on Tyue; the address of Mr Gladstone at the former place being met by the speeches of the Marquis of Salisbury and Sir Stafford Northcote at the latter city. The Conservatives hold that the Government is not pursuing a vigorous policy iv dealing with South Africa and Indian affairs, and the management of the land question iv Ireland is also censured. Mr Gladstone, ou the other hand, believes England's duty to be to attend more particularly to the internal affairs of the Kingdom, and adopt a policy of non-intervention in the affairs of other nations. The speech of Mr Gladstone has had an effect upon Irish matters, inasmuch as Mr Parnell has been arrested,

no doubt for his utterances iv replying to the remarks of the Prime Minister on the Irish Land Bill and the Land League. How this will affect the Laud League is yet to be seen, but the fact of the Government taking such a step as incarcerating Parnell, the leader of a strong party in the House of Commons, the organiser of the Land League, and the prime mover in all the agitations in Ireland, at least shows that want of vigor, and a determination to carry out the law, are not now faults of the Gladstone administration.
