The Melbourne correspondent of Ihe "S. M. Herald," last week, writes thus-of larrikinism in the Victorian capital:— 11 Young savages break into a public-house, beat the landlord, destroy his property, insult his wife, consume his liquor, and stone the police sent in pursuit of them And we are quite helpless in the face of these filthy riots, for the police know it is little use interfering ; the magistrates only fine the scoundrels in nominal sums, or admonish them to be good boys for the future, and hence the larrikin is absolute master of the situation. Hawks, as we know, do not pick out hawks' eyes ; and as the bulk of our legislators are of the larrikin class, we are not likely to have any severe legislation against their own order!"

A man was tried some little time back for stealing several clocks. The defence set up by the learned gentleman who appeared for him was this—that after the prisoner had taken the clocks to his own house he put 'em all backl The jury didn't acquit him.

The editor of a country paper says :— " Wednesday's post brought us a letter addressed 'Rev.,' another "The Hon.,' another ' Col,' one Mr,' and the last •Esq.* On the way to dinner we accidentally stepped on a woman's train, and she addressed us thus : ' You brute!'"
