Me Ve9ey Stew am, in bis letter to the Thames County Council relative to the completion of the road from Paeroa to Katikati, put very forcibly the advantages which would result to the entire district by the construction of a good coach, road between the two places. Mr btewart having taken this subject in hand, ■is not the sort of a man to let it rest, for whatever faults be may have, want of energy is not one of them. He is a most perseveriag individual, and as his interests are concerned in seeing that facilities are afforded his people in Kaiikati to have a share of the trade with surrounding districts, he will be all the more likely to proceed energetically with the construction of road works. Id a late address to the Tauranga County Council, 'of which Mr Stewart is chairman,, he contrasted the progress made in the Tauranga district with that of the Thames. He said :—I think that, anyone; passing over the roads in this county must be struck with the difliereuce between them and those in other adjoining counties. I rode last week to the Thames, and I was certainly surprised to see the difference between the roads in the Thames county and ours. The great secret in road making is to keep the water tables clear, and to attend to the land slips, I must say that Captain Turner deserves the thanks of the entire community for the careful way in which he has supervised our roads. In the Thames County their Engineer is paid a considerably higher salary than ours, and besides that every riding has a deputy surveyor, and with all their outJay, including a much higher salary paid to thair clerk than the increased amount we are paying to MrMcCaw, which I had almost to drag out of the Council, our business is conducted more economically than those of our neighbours at the Thames. We are likely to hear more of Mr Stewart's opinions on such subjects when he gives his promised addresses to the electors of the Tauranga riding.
