Thames Rinking Club.

The members of the above Binking Club marked the close of the present rinking season by a fancy dress ball last night at the Academy of Music. It was one of the most successful balls ever given on the Thames, and the Academy never presented a more brilliant scene than it did last night; the gay colours of the ladies' dresses, the fantastic costumes and the amusing antics of some of the characters all contributed to heighten the picturesqueness of the gathering, and making it such a one as has never been witnessed before on the Thames. Where all were so pleasingly dressed, it would be inviduous to single out any number of tha ladies for special mention, but we may be permitted to speak of the excellent taste displayed and carefulness as to detail shown by some of the ladies in getting iip their impersonations. Mrs Ehrenfried as the Duchess of Devonshire, after the costume of the famous painting by the | artist Gainsborough, looked extremely well, and was quite a centre of attraction ; while in contrast may be mentioned the Maori belle of Miss Brewer, resembling in many respects the picture of the native beauty by Chevalier. The details were most carefully attended to, even to the tattooing on the chin, and the marks on the lips. Mrs Perry took the character of Folly, and had on a pretty dress, well covered with silver bells, that "made music wherever she went." Miss Smith, in Highland costume, as the famous heroine Flora Macdonald, was well dressed. Miss Coney as a Magicienne looked_ well, and with her wand was most anxiously assisting hearts with " but one thought between,'' to become even better acquainted. Miss Langsford also took the character of Folly. Mrs Gudgeon appeared in two costumes —as one of the Two Orphans in the first part of the evening, and as Winter later on ; in both costumes she looked well, eipecially we thought in the former. Miss Nellie Gray also took the part of Winter, as did Miss Steadman. Miss Wolff had on the picturesque dress of ; a Brunswick Peasant; several other ladies also, as will be seen from the list appended, impersonated, peasant girls. The Misses

Walkers had on pretty costnmes, one as\ the Daughter of the h'egiment, and one as ''w a Gipsy. Mrs Huxtable appeared as a \ Durse of the Scutari Hospital, and looked the character, Miss Kidings taking the part of a Charity Girl. Mrs Brassey made a pretty Dolly Varden. We would like to mention many others, but the \ limited space at our disposal prevents us. }, Of the gentlemen, Messrs Gudgeon and r Gellion as darkies, were immense, and Mr Perry as the Big Aunt in Pinafore kept the laughter going by his antics. Messr3 Turner aud Ferguson were well dressod, and Mr Brassey as a Chinaman, Mr Horhe as Mephistopheles, and Mr <iWiseman as Paul Pry, were very entertaining. The Committee deserve til* greatest credit from the manner in. which the whole affair was carried out, and no little credit is due to the band, under the leadership of Lieut. O'SullivaD, who supplied excellent music for the dancers. The ladies of the Committee provided refreshments, and Host Curtis the wines and light liquors.
