COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted after we went'to press last evening :— Letiebs.—-From Mr G. T. Wilkinson, on behalf of two Puru natives objecting to the road passing through their cultivations. Eesolved that they be informed the notificaton would receife attention.— From W. Fraser, forwarding his resignation as Eeturuiug Officer to the Council. Resignation accepted; Captain Skene appointed successor.—From the Survey Department stating that this road would be laid off when the land was being sub-divided. It was resolved that Government be again written to, and requested to instruct their engineer to lay oft' the road immediately.—From the Town Clerk suggesting joint action on the part of the two Councils in providing.a hospital for infectious diseases. The Charitable Aid Committee were instructed to confer with the Borough Council in the matter, and take action if necessary.— From Mr \V; S. Greenville, stating that blasting operations on the road adjoining
his mine had severely shaken the upper ground, which threatened to collapse if not attended to.— Erova Mr Mears to hare a road made to the vicinity of the Annie Creek, Owharoa, to enable him to test his reef.—Referred to Board of Works.— From Mr G. N. Brassey on behalf of Mr Neal, demanding the payment of damages lor goods destroyed through the bursting of a water main. Referred to the Finance Committee. —From Mr Charlton for permission to lay a tramway through a block of laud at Hikutaia. Granted.—From Mr Littlejohn stating that the punt at Waitoki had been set adrift by natives, and was now in possession of tbe JNgatihako tribe. Resolved to forward the communication to the Native Minister.— From Mr Andrew Hart, regretting that he had committed an indiscretion by placing his charges for extra work as Health Officer on the pay-sheat, but still pressing his claim to four days' pay. Referred to Finance Committee.—Claim- , ants against the Council for compensation, and accounts s,ent, in Referred to Finance Committee. — From Mr G. P. Hilton, forwarding an elaborate, scheme, in connection with the Moanatairi tunnel. ,-f, Referred to the Board «f-- Worki.— From Mrs Arden for the remission of her. rates; granted.—From a large nojnbtrfOf miners in the Waitektnri district praying that the contract let for the repair of the - Welcome Tramway be carried out;.,'. The Couucil resolved itself into Committee for its consideration. -—Cr Brown, on behfelfof the owners, of the .tramway, declined to. , hand over the tramway td this Council. He '* said that he was about to .pay a visit, to Waitekauri, and intended taking steps fojr ; the repair of the tramway- on his oirn [. account;. That Mr Eljiott's request for certain culverts to be laid on a road near his farm in the Waitekauri district be complied with at onee I.—- -? Cr Brown said the road to Wick's battery would be absolutely useless, as it would, take a much larger sum than that:, men- ~ tioned to make it available for traffic— The report was adopted with the exception of the clause referring to the road in question. The Water Race Committee reported as follows: —four Committee having well considered the apolication of the directors of the Queen of Beauty Gold Mining Company for a three months' allowance on tbeir water charges, are of opinion that inasmuch as the Council has already made a concession of five weeks' payment during the months of July and August, no farther reduction should, be allowed.. .
That in respect of Mr Greenville's application the regulations should be adhered to. Your Committee also recommend the - Surveyor should be instructed to prepare plans and specifications and call for tenders for the Hihi tunnels and other water race works in connection therewith, at the earliest date. - ■ • * *■'
Or Porter moved "That, owing to the improved prospects in the Ohiuemuri - district, the Chairman and such Councillors as can make it convenient visit-the ; riding, for the purpose of taking into consideration the best means of expending funds available for that district."—Cr Bagnall seconded the motion, which was - carried.
On the motion of Cr Porter the resolution was rescinded appointing the members of ridings a committee for the expenditure C of money within such ridings. v . ' '$ The Finance Committee's report showed a debit balance at the bank ( of £5817. . The report of the Committee recommended ' that the resolution of'Kovemßer^Mt' Ife."., rescinded, and that the Chairman's sainrj. for the current year be . £300—The -\ recommendation was accepted.,; ;. . •- *£$>. The Flood Committee recommended the '. following claims for compensation:— Mes3rs Forrester, £10; Thompsoni £5; "' - Fogarty,'£lo; Small and Gordon, £50. Cr Porter objected to this latter amount, . and urged that it be struck out.—He was overruled, and the report was adopted.
