SOUTHERN CROSS. The manager reports as follows:— "Sfcoping is still being continued on specimen leader. A few pounds of picked stone have come to hand from here during the last week, and the leader looks very promising. I "have had the winze we broke into on lo 1 reef sunk down a distance of 30 feet, but the reef at this depth is pinched up very small, and, not seeing any gold in the stone on sinking to this depth, I thought it best to discontinue sinking for the present. I have now commenced to open out on the reef from tbe winze, and hope to have better success in driving and stoping on it. lam also driving ou a leader in the hangingwall of iNo 1 reef of battery level. The leader looks well in places, but I have seen no gold in it yet. I had a trial lot put through from above battery level, where the cross reef junctioned with another leader, but the stuff from here was rather poor. There is on hand at present 81bs of picked stone, 4 loads of quartz, and 17ozs Udwts of amalgam from G loads of quartz that were crushed after retorting on the 17th inst.—-James Cowts."
