HAWERA.
This day.
I have just been talking to Hunter of Otahehu, upon whose land the Maoris are ploughing. He tells me thafc many settlers blame him for not deciding to turn the Maoris oft', but as the Defence Minister was there and took, the responsibility off him of deciding which course was to be be adopted, he thinks under the circumstances he did what was best. Some other settlers on the Plains hare made private arrangements and exchanges with the natives, and both races appear quiet satisfied. The rumours lately prevailing are now subsiding.
