(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

SiE^Will you grant me space, in. your widespread columns to ventilate a grievance which is now becoming oppressive on the ratepayers of the Kauaeranga riding. I, like most of the ratepayers of this riding, am a poor uiau, with a family I to provide for, and in these hard times X am glad to get a few days' work, even though I am not related to a certain storekeeper, nor do Ideal at his.store, or else I should have plenty of work —could I also hail from the West of.England. I I make this confession to you freely, well knowing you are always ready to assist the working class. I have been working for the County, and have received 7a per day, with which I was quite satisfied until I heard that some of the men were paid 8s per day for the same houri. Now, I do not think this is right for working men to be treated like this. Why not all be paid alike for the sam» class of work P If this thing goes on we shall all try to got one of our relations in the Gonnftil. Another grievance is this : There were a number of men discharged, myself being among the number, as th« work was to be lot by contract Bnfc judge my surprise when, a few d«y» after, there were more men put on, and some that had been working for years, while some of us poor ratepayers were walking about in want. I would also ask if lam right in supposing that Mr Aitken is engineer P Then why has Cr Deeble to much authority as to who is pat on and kept on for the County, such as appoint* ing second bosses, &c. P Or can he monopolise all authority ? I s do not think that even a Councillor should^ hare all his relations provided with work, to th* exclusion of othew.—l am, &©.,

A lUwirii.
