In Memoriam.
0 Death, dire aide-de-camp of Time ! Insatiate Reaper, could'st thou not Have spared this one, our gifted President ? A little while hath he but lived To taste ol glory, well deserved, Bestowed on him by millions. Noble in heart, word, thought, and life, By actions proved—if not by blood ; By nations loved throughout the world: Now cold in death, in peaceful sleep. 0 cruel Fate, thy work is done: America now mourns the loss Of him thou hast laid low. 0 base, degraded, villainous assassin, What punishment on thee will ere redeem The loss entailed by thy vile handiwork 1 Wert thou in pieces torn by raging beastsSuperior far^above thy loathsome caste; Wert thou despatched by the infuriate mob, Or slain according to the laws of man, 'Twould not redeem his loss! A little while he has the honour held— The highest in the States; But now cut off in prime of life By unrelenting Fate. The whole known world is sad to-day, And millions shed a tear For one who's now in Heavenly bliss, While angels •watclf around his bier. -L. W. P.
