Washington, Sept. 19, evening. . Death of President Gaifleld, President Garfield died today at Long Branch. London, Sept. 19. The Eight Hon. W. E..Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has refused to grant a general liberation of the prisoners who are detained in custody under the pro* visions of the Irish Coercion Act. Washington, September 20. Accounts to hand this morning from Long Branch state that the President died calmly at 10.50 last night. At 10.25 he was sleeping quietly, when he awoke with pain in his heart, and in fifteen minutes breathed his last. Mrs Garfield was present at the death-bed.
In consequence of President Garfield's decease, the Cabinet has summoned General Chester Arthur, Vice-President, to fill the Presidency for the unexpired term, nearly three years and six months.
