A little girl, a daughter of Mr Bell, farmer, of Te Baku, Waikato, w.as burned to death. Her clothes caught fire while playing near, where the fern was being burned. Fiji News. By the arrival of the Southern Cross from Fiji, we learn that the Detached Squadron arrived at Leruka on Sept. 4. The inhabitants exerted themselves to the utmost to entertain them. The local Cricket Clubs were beaten by the Squadron cricketers; but the Levuka Rifle Association gained a victory over the visitors. The Court of Inquiry into the wreck of the Meg Merrilles, blamed Capt Hughe for keeping his vessel on the starboard tack instead of going round. The Rotumah natives are tired of annexation, and are petitioning the Queen for the restoration of independence. The cocoanut trees at Suva-Sura are being devasted by a large insect which eat off the tops of the trees. A number of labourers arrived from the New Hebrides for the Colonial Sugar Company. Building is active at Suva, the new capital. Mr Lambert, member of the Eoyal Yacht Squadron, has arrived at Levuka with his family in his 800 ton yacht.
