This day.
Mr D. H. McKbnzie to-day received the following cablegram from his agent at Newcastle :—" Yokohama : The barque Wellington is a total loss, but the crew is saved." The Wellington was uninsured, and left Newcastle on June 11th with coals for Yokohama. Tt is not known whether she had discharged her cargo or not. She was commanded by Captain Dick.
Replying to an application for the use of the paddock at the back of the Government House as a playground for the Grammar School boys, the Governor said he would not encourage the people in not providing a proper playground, but would give temporary permission to occupy the ground for six months.
Bailey, boat-builder, of the North Shore, had two fingers taken off with a circular saw to-day.
