ALBURNIA.

In breaking down the reef in the eastern drive on the Success reef at the Whau level last night, the manager obtained several pounds of good picked stone. Four of these stones were on view at the Bank of New Zealand to-day. They would weigh over a pound each, and the gold is disseminated right through them. A deal of copper is also visible in the stone, and a little ruby silver, This reef, the manager informs us,| runs right through the Alburnia ground, and there is about 70 feet of backs to take out. —The manager, under date the 16i'a of September, 1881, s&porfce to the director*

as follows: —Sons of Freedom tunnel: This drive is now being extended in the company's ground, alter passing through the Whau ground a distance of 2u9 feet. The reef is now small, with strong sandstone walls. I had intended to start rising at this point, to meet the winze coming down from the 160 feet level, but the reef here being small, the ground hard, with but poor ventilation, I consider it will be better to sink the winze the full depth, as, since the erection of the doors and air boxes, the air is sufficiently good to carry it down tha whole distance.l have therefore determined to continue the tunnel a further distance of 100 feet, and have called for tenders for that purpose, returnable to-morrow. 160 feet level: The winze is now down a depth of 52 feet. Since the junction with the reef coming iv from the hanging-wall, the quantity of quartz is not so great, so that I think we will be able now to make better progress in sinking than we have done for the last few weeks. There is no change in the quality of the reef since last report. Hanging-wall leader, 160 feet level: This drive has been extended a distance of 24ft. During the whole distance the reef has had a very promising appearance, but has not shown any gold. This lam not sur. prised at, as no gold was seen in the wiDze for within 25 feet of the bottom. It is, however, necessary to continue the drive, and as soon as possible stoping will be started. I am saving all the quartz from this drive, together withi the best■ looking quartz from the winze being sunk" from the 16.0 ft level, whicji will be" forwarded to the battery in'a few days, when its value will be ascertained. 70ft level, hangiog-wall leaa«r%3?Uete are two men still prospecting a smallbtock left in this level, where we see a little gold, but nothing of much consequence. Whau lerel: I have let a contract since cleaning out crosscut to drive through a small block of ground left standing by Christie and party, tributers. At first there was merely the formation of a leader, but as we drive it improves, and I intend driving through the block to astertain if possible if there is another run of gold left behind. Whau level, Success reef: We are now driving east and west on this reef, and have opened out a stope going qast with four men. In the eastern drive we get some stone carrying good dabs of gold at every breaking down. In the western drive the reef is about 18 inches wide and looks well, but as yet we have not seen any goldi The reef in slopes is of a similar nature and size. lam now forwarding a trial crushing to the battery, and will let you know the result when it is crushed.—T. -Kadfobd." t

MOANATAIABI.

Cleaning up at the battery took place yesterday, and the amalgam was retorted, for the; return ot 120ozs. For this yield 104 loads of quartz have been put through the battery, which was kept employed for a fortnight. r

HAPE CHEEK.

An interim retorting for Wilson (late Hearn) and party took place to-day, and yielded 55ozs 17dwta gold. The reef, we are informed, is looking better than ever, and a good yield may be expected when the cleaning up takes place. Mr J. Walsh, who bought the shares of Messrs Deeble and Hearn when those gentlemen sold out, has disposed of one share to Mr J. Neal, butcher, of Grahamstown.

SOUTHERN CEOBS.

For some days crushing for this company has been going on at the Alburnia battery, and retorting took place this morning for the return of 546zs 3dwta melted gold. For this 27 loads of general stuff were crushed, which came princi* pally from the big reef lately cut in the ■crosscut at battery level; The remainder, of the dirt came from the stopes on the . cross and specimen leaders.

GOLD EETUENB.

Pbimkose.—A crushing of six or seven loads for this claim has produced 6ozs 13dwts gold.
