CALEDONIAN.

The reef in the east drive at No. 1 level continues to keep up itys good appearance; and, if anything, is slightly improving. Good dabs of gold are seea ia every shot. The manager does not intend to pick out any more stone, but will send it all straight off to the battery as soon as it is broken down. Since Wednesday he has been stripping and taking down the reef along towards the end of the drive, ia order to get out a crushing. As soon as he has a goodsized chamber made, he will start to drive across the lode to test it right through. As yet not more than four feet of it have been taken dow.n, whereas it will probably turn out to be about 12 or 14 feet through. Crushing this stuff is a slow process owing to its extreme hardness, and the trial parcel now going through the battery will not be cleaned up before about the middle of next week. As yet no adequate idea can be formed of.the value of the stone, but it is believed that the return will come up to expectations. QUEEN OF BKAUTY. . ' The manager reports as follows on the Bth inst.:—'• The water in the shaft this morning was 39ft 6in below No 6 lerel; it has been going down about one foot every 24 hours since the Turbine started. There now remains about 35 feet of water to get out to be sufficiently low for new pumping gear. The contractors for •stripping shaft and enlarging chamber are working, and hope to have made good progress to be prepared for Mr Judd's work. Mr Judd's men have a good portion of the timber work for pit in position. I find a large portion of the foundry work in a forward state. Some repairs are required to the winding shaft between Eos 4 aud 5 levels, which will be started as soon as timber comes, from the mill. I have been down the Piako shaft and find that repairs at No 3 level must be made before I can ascertain if we can go farther down to get out the pipes, as at present the shaft is in a very bade state." GOLDEN STAR. The manager reports :—I am still push, ing the main drive ahead. The small lode spoken of in my last on footwall has made quartz right across the face. It looks as if there would be a change, as the country was disturbed by a cross lode. The reason why no gold is got is the mineral veins do not strike into the lode; once they do, gold will most likely be ' obtained.
