The Wellington correspondent of our | morning contemporary professes to pos« sess special knowledge respecting the mind, of Sir George Grey and Mr Speight, as to their innermost thoughts and future' intentions ; and if the public is to believe that . tho. } inspirations as to Sir George's, neifi more in political life had emanated from the hon. gentleman himself, then it •is YttiutoJauey be hus abaudoned all the
old lore he has professed for the 'l'hain<vi to seek fresh fields and pastures new. But we happen to know that Sir Geoigc Grey has no intention of again offering himself for the Thames ooiistituenoy, and as such is the case, (ho field is open to all comers. There is another reference in the gossip—for not being authentic, it is nothing more —crediting both Sir George Grey find Mr Speight with characterising the action of Mr McGowan and Mr McCulloagh as "impertinence,", for offering themselves as candidates for the constituency. Possibly the member for City East, whose highest ambition is to become the representative for the Thames Borough, might think it impertinent, but Sir Gporge entertains no such thought, and if he did is tgt>; politic to express it. We are not aware that Mr Speight has any special claim upon the Thames constituency; he has not. rendered any special services ,to characterise his ushering himself forth and claiming the Thames seat, and such being the case it can be said with equal gopd grace that in asking the suffrages of the people he, too, is "impertinent." We shall, on a future occasion, make good the assertion. We have, no faith in people who trade upon politics—whoj without adequate means at their command to render them independent, without selfreliance, and devoid of principle—■characteristics of such men—seek to make political life a profession rather than take their place in the productive ranks of the people of the colony. ■'.., •>.-
